RSS Feeds now up for Daily Gosho, FTT, and BDBD
You may or not be aware that the SGI-USA site has, for a long time now, provided the “Daily Wisdom: From the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin” perpetual calendar online. It’s a set of daily inspirational quotes taken from the Gosho. I love it, I have the hardcopy that you can buy at the SGI-USA mail order store, and I wrote the original script that put it online.
In that script, I made the daily updates available in multiple formats and tools - one of them being RSS. Yes, that’s right, you could subscribe to the feed in any aggregating RSS reader, (like Google Reader) and get all your news in one place. Life was very good.
So then the site was updated to a more modern feel, and when that happened, the RSS feed capability went bye-bye. I have not heard of any plans to “fix” that. So, I rolled my own. I can use a web crawler programmatically to grab the static page from the SGI-USA site, and put the text into an RSS feed. Simple, and it took maybe an hour. The new feed is now available here:
Putting that URL address into any RSS reader enables the functionality I wanted. The only down side is that I link back to the static HTML web site version, and they (being an official site) don’t like back to the RSS feed I provide (on a personal site). That’s the only limitation I’ve noticed, and it really is not a big deal when using an RSS reader…
Now, since that was simple (too simple!), I decided to do the same for the other two daily calendar things on their site as well. So I did an RSS feed for the “For Today and Tomorrow” and “Buddhism Day by Day: Wisdom for Modern Life” daily inspirationals by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda as well. These feeds are listed below:
- For Today and Tomorrow: http://nichiren.info/rss/daily_encouragement
- Buddhism Day by Day: http://nichiren.info/rss/daily_buddhism
Well, this makes me happy, maybe these will will make other random people happy as well.
